Sir Isaac Julien CBE and June Sarpong OBE are among six new trustees appointed to Tate’s Board.
The six new appointees will bring fresh insight to the Board and a breadth of experience across the arts, entertainment, business and finance sectors.
Chair of Tate Trustees Roland Rudd remarked, “It’s brilliant to welcome six new trustees to Tate’s Board. Each will make a pivotal contribution to Tate, sharing their incredible expertise and knowledge across a range of sectors. Together, Tate’s trustees continue to support the gallery to deliver ambitious new programmes, foster creative talent and share the collection with an even wider public.”
The appointees will join Tate’s current Trustees Roland Rudd, Dame Jayne-Anne Gadhia DBE, Dame Anya Hindmarch DBE, Kwame Kwei-Armah OBE, Michael Lynton, Rosalind Nashashibi, Danny Rimer OBE, Howard Shore and Lord Ed Vaizey.
Tate’s Board of Trustees determines policy and, together with senior Tate staff, sets Tate’s strategic direction. It oversees the management of the gallery, with the trustees acting as guardians of the public interest.
Sir Isaac Julien CBE is a critically acclaimed British artist and filmmaker.
In 2018, Sir Isaac joined the faculty at the University of California Santa Cruz where he is a Distinguished Professor of the Arts and leads the Moving Image Lab together with Arts Professor Mark Nash.
He has been making films and producing film installations for over 40 years, including: Once Again... (Statues Never Die) (2022), Lina Bo Bardi – A Marvellous Entanglement (2019), Lessons of the Hour – Frederick Douglass (2019), Playtime (2014), Ten Thousand Waves (2010), Western Union: small boats (2007), True North (2004), Baltimore (2003), Paradise Omeros (2002), and Vagabondia (2000).
Current and recent international solo exhibitions include: Lessons of the Hour, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2024; What Freedom is to Me, Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, 2024; K21, Dusseldorf, 2023; Tate Britain, London, 2023; Lina Bo Bardi, A Marvellous Entanglement, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, 2023; Once Again… (Statues Never Die), Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, 2022. Sir Isaac is the recipient of The Royal Academy of Arts Charles Wollaston Award 2017 and a Kaiserring Goslar Award in 2022.
In 2022, he was awarded a Knighthood for services to diversity and inclusion in art.
June Sarpong OBE has enjoyed a 25-year career which has already seen her become one of the most recognisable faces of British television.
June is also the Co-Founder of the Women:Inspiration & Enterprise. WIE first launched in New York in 2010 and then in the UK in 2012 and has featured leading speakers from a gamut of industries. Previous speakers include Sarah Brown, Melinda Gates, Arianna Huffington, Donna Karan, Queen Rania, Nancy Pelosi, Iman and many more.
In November 2019, June was appointed as the BBC’s first Director of Creative Diversity and was in the role for three years. She was also the first Black woman to sit on the corporation’s Executive Committee and spearheaded the organisation’s $124 million investment in diverse content.
She is the author of “Diversify”, “Power of Women”, “Power of Privilege” and “Calling Una Marson”.
June was awarded an MBE in 2007 and an OBE in 2020.
They are join as new trustees by Nick Clarry, Managing Partner at CVC Capital Partners, businessman and philanthropist, Jack Kirkland, Tim Richards CBE, Founder and CEO of Vue Entertainment and Professor Patricia Rubin, an art historian, professor and administrator.
