Impact X Capital Partners, a leading European venture capital firm, has announced the successful completion of its latest fund, Impact X Global I, LP, securing significant backing from prominent investors. This milestone marks a significant step in the firm's mission to dismantle systemic barriers in venture capital and support underrepresented entrepreneurs across Europe.
The fund has attracted substantial investment from key players, including Illumen Capital, a BIPOC-led investment firm based in Oakland, California, and Basecamp Fund, a London-based fund of funds managed by Phoenix Court. These new backers join existing tier-1 limited partners such as Guy's & St Thomas Foundation, the Visa Foundation, and Atomico, solidifying Impact X's position as a catalyst for change in the venture capital landscape.
Eric Collins, CEO and co-founder of Impact X Capital, and a regular contributor to Pitch Black Magazine, emphasized the significance of this fund close, stating, "This fund close is about more than capital—it's about building a coalition of partners who share our vision for immediately transforming venture capital allocating now and into the future." He highlighted the importance of partnering with Illumen Capital and Basecamp to expand the firm's reach and drive meaningful innovation by saying, “With Illumen Capital and Basecamp, we are expanding our ability to drive meaningful innovation, deliver outstanding returns plus create measurable sustained impact.”
Illumen Capital, led by Managing Partner Daryn Dodson, brings a unique perspective to the partnership, focusing on integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into investment strategies. The firm champions the "diversity dividend," recognizing the proven benefits of diverse teams in achieving superior performance. "At Illumen Capital, we are deeply committed to unlocking the full potential of overlooked and underestimated funds and companies," said Dodson. "We are honored to partner with Impact X as a way to advance our shared mission beyond North America, bridge equity gaps, and foster innovation in the UK and Europe." Illumen Capital is focused on reducing bias within investment decision making.
Basecamp Fund, known for its investments in ventures with measurable impact, complements Impact X's focus on European markets. The fund's strategic approach aligns with Impact X's mission to support emerging managers and drive innovation.
Impact X's investment in Marshmallow, the UK's second Black-led unicorn, exemplifies the firm's successful strategy. Marshmallow, a tech-driven insurance company, achieved a 75% turnover growth to £184 million in 2023, while maintaining a workforce that over-indexes for both women and people of colour. This success story underscores Impact X's ability to identify and nurture high-potential businesses in overlooked markets.
Paula Groves, Chief Investments Officer at Impact X Capital, emphasized the value created by underrepresented entrepreneurs, stating, "Companies like Marshmallow are proof of how underrepresented entrepreneurs can create extraordinary value for the global economy who can't - and shouldn't - leave money on the table."
With this new funding, Impact X aims to invest in up to 30 high-growth companies in the short term, unlocking opportunities across Europe and the UK. The firm's commitment to delivering both financial returns and societal impact remains at the forefront of its mission.
